A BRAND New You: A personal branding story

During the National Women’s Conference hosted by the Nation Diversity Council I joined some extraordinary women Christine LaFollette (Partner in Charge at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP), Kera Wright (VP, Finance at McKesson), Marie Myers (Finance VP at HP), and one man our fantastic moderator Eddie Turner (Executive Coach), on a panel “It’s all about a BRAND new you” in Houston, Texas. During the panel discussion, we shared our collective insights on what is and how to develop your personal brand. Here I’ve collected some of my favorite tips from our session:

Take time to reflect on your own unique story,

Be authentic,

Consider what it will take to “uplevel” to your next goal,

Take care of yourself, you can have it all but you need to take care of yourself first (ie. take 15 minutes every morning to prepare for the day – slow down),

Be bold and ask for the job, the raise, the thing that you want. Women tend to wait until they feel they are 100% ready while men tend to ask first. Be bold and ask!

Get a coach, a mentor, a champion to help,

Develop your vision; your life will go where you are looking. Consider developing a vision board to help you develop clarity around what you want.

Be prepared. Do your homework and know who you are, what you want and understand what you bring to the table.

Know who you are when you walk into a room. Own it and be confident that you belong there.

So, what is confidence? It’s being clear about your values, your gifts and passions. Get clear and everything will come into focus and confidence will be there with you.

Brands evolve and so will you. Stay relevant and mindful about your personal brand. Be willing to grow.
